If I have an Intel core i5 quad-core processor with an integrated graphics core, do i need to buy a video card?

do i still need to buy a seperate video card like nvidia or ati? i know that there are amazing video cards but i on a budget and i could always upgrade.... my question is could i immediately get by with the core i5's integrated graphics? the advertisement says integrated graphics core makes seperate vid card unnecessary for gaming but i didnt know whether to believe it or not|||If the motherboard supports the onboard video, then you don't need a video card. Performance in games will suck though.|||Um...

That depends.

What is the integrated GPU? ATi (now also known as AMD), nVidia, Intel, etc?

What is the MODEL of the chipset? (I do NOT mean the i5 core.)

What are you planning to use the computer for?

Office/School? Yes, regardless of the chipset you'll likely have no issues with ANYTHING.

Surfing/Videos/etc? Maybe.

High-end gaming? Probably not, but not a 100% no.

Now...do you NEED to buy a graphics card?

No (depending on what the computer is to be used for).

That being said, for convenience, yes...you should have a discrete card. If you have an Intel, AMD, or VIA Southbridge chipset (or any generic manufacturer), I would recommend an AMD (the HD 5770 can be had for under $150 in most markets in North America). If you have an nVidia chipset, you're more or less stuck with nVidia products (they have a more common problem with conflicts with discrete cards than anyone else's chipsets, which can lead to system conflicts, poor performance, and, in the worst cases, PHYSICAL damage). The nVidia 460 should fill any need on a budget. Sorry I can't help with pricing, I don't use nVidia products - Professional techs have been known to have issues when installing the cards, and I am far from that...AMD/ATi cards are literally plug and play with almost anything.

Oh...incidentally...the i5 core does NOT have integrated graphics. That functionality is installed in a separate chip on the motherboard.

Good Luck!|||Core i5 have been intergrated with HD graphic chipset and supports the playback of the HD video and also some medium-consuming video games such as WoW. BTW, it performs poor when it comes to heavy demanding games such as GTA IV (if it can run, it will runs on medium-high quality)and also other resource hogging game. If you plan to use discrete graphic card, checkout the ATI HD 5850 and the also NVIDIA graphic cards. As I see, intergrated graphic cards are suck and just playing blu-ray HD movie and surfing the internet. Keep some money for buying other powerful graphic card other than the intel intergrated HD graphic|||Like the two have said, but you must also consider whether the tower can actually accomodate a graphics card, and whether the psu is up to the job to power a power hungry card.|||For playing HD video, no. For playing Video games yes. It may get u by for older games but would definitely get a dedicated graphics card to play your games on.
